First Annual Blue Lake Challenge October 19, 2012

First Annual Blue Lake Challenge
10 Items

Blue Lake Walking Trail #119
Trail Length: 1 mile
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Access:  Take Cabarton Road (south end of Cascade) for about 6.3 miles until you come to a large red barn where Cabarton Road intersects with Snowbank Road #446 (closed Nov. 16 - May 31) turn right onto Snowbank Road #446 (sign indicating Blue Lake 10 miles) follow #446 to within 2 miles of the Federal Radar Site.  You can see Blue Lake to the south.  There is a large parking area at the Blue Lake Trail #119 trailhead.  Off to your right you will see a small body of water named Potters Pond.  There are several areas near the trailhead for camping and most will accommodate equestrian use.

Description:  This is an easy part-day or overnight hike into on of Idaho's pristine mountain lakes.  While there is no question you're in the high country, it is a hike even young children can enjoy.  Fishing is a favorite activity at Blue Lake with lots of shore access.  The trail into Blue Lake is very easy to follow, and even has wooden bridges to help you cross boggy areas filled with wildflowers.  The trail levels out midsection, meandering through meadows filled with wildflowers.  There are several stream crossings and, depending on the time of year, occasional waterfalls cascade down the hillsides.

Challenge;  Prepare and execute a 10 item backpacking list for an overnight trip.  Each item selected will count toward your 10 items.  No items may be shared, you are to prepare for the trip and select all the items that you would need as if this were a solo trip.

Items that do not count towards your 10 item list:
Food and beverage ( this includes one container to secure water in )
Clothing (this does not include insulating layers such as a sleeping bag )
First Aid Kit ( this is for emergencies only, items contained may only be used as such )
Camera ( to document trip, smart phones to include music devices are permitted )

Breakfast in Cascade Friday morning.

Soon to be a spoon.

Fire starting 101.

Josh's first attempt at a Swedish stove.

Jordan finds a log raft and decides to taken it
out on the lake.

Although it doesn't look like it, this was the spoon I carved.
It was functional if not aesthetically pleasing. It took
over an hour to carve.

Brad's tin foil dinner smelled fantastic.

Jordan had to dry his socks out after he returned
from his voyage.
